Aircon Relocation Cape Town

Home Aircon Relocation

Aircon relocation in Cape Town means removing an existing unit and reinstalling it somewhere else: a different wall, a different room, or a different property entirely. It comes up with renovations, moving house, and condensers that were put somewhere nobody thought about at the time.

It is a real job rather than an unbolt-and-rehang. The system has to be pumped down, disconnected, moved, reconnected, vacuumed and recharged.

Tell us where the unit is now, where it needs to go and roughly how old it is, and get relocation quotes.

What a Relocation Involves

  1. Refrigerant pumped down into the outdoor unit and the valves closed.
  2. Electrical supply isolated and disconnected.
  3. Pipework disconnected, indoor and outdoor units removed and their brackets taken down.
  4. New positions prepared: bracket, core hole, drain route, electrical supply.
  5. Units mounted, new pipework run or the existing line set reused if length and condition allow.
  6. New flares made, system vacuumed, charge released or topped to the correct weight.
  7. Commissioned and tested, original holes and brackets made good.

Reused copper is the detail worth asking about. Flares should be re-cut rather than re-used, and a line set that was run for a 2 m route rarely reaches a new position without joining or replacement. Joins are a legitimate future leak point, so ask what is planned.

Common Reasons to Relocate

  • A renovation puts a wall, a window or a cupboard where the indoor unit is.
  • The condenser sits under a bedroom window and the noise has become intolerable.
  • A neighbour or the body corporate has raised a complaint about position or noise.
  • The outdoor unit is in a spot with no airflow and the unit keeps tripping out.
  • Moving house and taking the unit with you.
  • The indoor unit blows straight onto a bed or a desk.

When Replacing Beats Relocating

Relocation is skilled labour plus materials and it does not come with a new warranty. Against that, a new inverter split is often only a few thousand rand more installed.

Aircon Relocation Prices in Cape Town

Relocation to another propertyR4,500 – R11,000Two site visits plus transport
Removal only, no reinstallR1,200 – R2,800Includes refrigerant recovery
Reinstall only, unit already removedR2,800 – R6,500Assumes the unit was pumped down correctly
Outdoor unit moved onlyR2,200 – R5,500Common for noise or airflow complaints
New line setR350 – R650 per metreWhere the old run will not reach
Core drilling at the new positionR450 – R950 per holeMore through concrete
Making good old holes and bracketsR450 – R1,500Sealing and patching, not painting
Electrical supply to a new positionR1,800 – R5,500If the circuit does not reach

Indicative Cape Town ranges, not a quotation. Access and pipe length dominate. A ground-floor move of two metres and a third-floor condenser relocation are barely the same job.

Get relocation and replacement quoted side by side. On older units the second one often wins.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to move an aircon in Cape Town?

A relocation within the same property commonly runs R3,500 to R8,500, including refrigerant recovery, reinstallation and recharge. New pipework, a condenser at height or a new electrical run push it higher.

Can I move an aircon myself?

Not sensibly. The refrigerant has to be pumped down before disconnection, the system has to be vacuumed before recharging, and venting refrigerant to atmosphere is both damaging and avoidable. Disconnecting without pumping down loses the whole charge.

Is it worth moving an old aircon?

Rarely past about ten years. You are paying skilled labour and materials on a unit near the end of its life, with no new warranty. Price a replacement alongside the relocation quote before deciding.

Should I take my aircon when I move house?

Usually not worth it. Removal, transport and reinstallation land close to the cost of a new unit installed, and a fitted aircon adds value to what you are selling. It also arrives without a warranty at the new address.

Can the outdoor unit be moved without moving the indoor unit?

Yes, and it is a common job where noise or airflow is the problem. The pipe run is re-routed or extended, the system is recovered and recharged, and the indoor unit stays where it is.
