Home Aircon Replacement

Aircon replacement in Cape Town is the decision you reach when the repair stops making sense: a compressor gone on an old unit, an R22 system nobody can get gas for, or a unit that has been fixed three times in two summers.

A replacement is cheaper than a first-time installation, because the pipework, the core hole and usually the electrical supply already exist.

Send the age, size and brand of the existing unit and where it is mounted, and get replacement quotes.

Repair or Replace?

SituationUsual call
Under 6 years, electrical faultRepair
Under 6 years, compressor failureCheck the warranty first — compressors are often covered longer
6 to 10 years, cheap partRepair
6 to 10 years, compressor or control boardPrice both, replacement often wins
Over 10 years, any major faultReplace
Running R22Replace
Third repair in two summersReplace

The comparison people get wrong is repair cost against the box price of a new unit. Compare the repair against a new system supplied, installed and warranted, with the efficiency gain and the fresh workmanship warranty counted in.

Old and Obsolete Systems

R22 was the standard refrigerant in older units and has been phased out. Gas is scarce, expensive and getting worse. Beyond the gas, a unit of that generation is fixed-speed, so it runs flat out and switches off rather than modulating, and consumes considerably more electricity than a current inverter for the same cooling.

Parts availability is the other constraint. On discontinued models, control boards and fan motors are frequently no longer obtainable, which ends the conversation regardless of what you were willing to spend.

Resize While You Are Replacing

A replacement is the natural moment to correct a sizing mistake. Reasons the original size may no longer be right:

  • The room was extended, opened up, or glazed differently.
  • The original unit never coped on hot afternoons — it was undersized from day one.
  • The unit cools fast then sits idle and the room feels clammy — it was oversized.
  • The space is now a home office with screens and people in it all day.
  • A ceiling was raised or the roof insulated, changing the load in either direction.

What a Replacement Involves

  1. Existing refrigerant recovered rather than vented, and the old unit removed.
  2. Existing pipework inspected. Sound copper of the right diameter is often reused; it must be flushed or replaced when the old compressor burned out.
  3. New indoor and outdoor units mounted, usually on the existing positions and brackets.
  4. New flares made, connections tightened, system vacuumed and charged.
  5. Electrical supply and isolator checked against the new unit's rating.
  6. Commissioned and tested, old unit removed from site.

Ask specifically whether existing pipework is being reused and whether it has been checked. Reusing line sets is normal and fine; reusing them after a compressor burnout without flushing contaminates the new unit and voids the warranty.

Electrical upgrade for a larger unitR1,800 – R5,500Where the existing circuit is undersized

Indicative Cape Town ranges, not a quotation. Replacement runs below a first-time installation because the core hole, pipe route and supply exist. Upsizing, new pipework or access at height close that gap.

Compare the repair quote against a replacement quote before committing to either.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does an aircon last in South Africa?

Most domestic split units give around 10 to 15 years with regular servicing. Coastal installations tend to sit at the lower end because salt air attacks the condenser coil and fixings.

Is it cheaper to replace or repair an aircon?

As a rough rule, if the repair comes to more than about half the cost of a new installed system, replace. Age tilts it further: the same repair is worth doing at five years and rarely worth doing at twelve.

Can I keep my existing pipework when replacing an aircon?

Usually, if the copper is sound and the right diameter for the new unit. It must be flushed or replaced if the old compressor burned out, otherwise contamination carries into the new system.

My aircon uses R22. What are my options?

Practically, replacement. R22 is phased out, supply is scarce and expensive, and the units still running it are old enough that other failures follow. Spending on gas buys time rather than a solution.

Will a new aircon use less electricity?

Generally yes, and noticeably so against a fixed-speed unit of ten or more years ago. An inverter modulates instead of switching on and off at full power, which cuts consumption on part-load days — which in Cape Town is most of them.
